This site has been recently cited by the Department of Education
as being an example of excellence in Web-based pedagogy. Here's
a little bit about myself:
Dr. Tom Gibson is one of the most sought after Brass
performers and teachers in the country. He has performed solo recitals,
concerts, master classes, and clinics around the world. He enjoys a
triple threat career as a celebrated Trombonist, Conductor, and as a
teacher/coach. Dr. Gibson is a Performing Artist for the Eastman
Corporation and proudly performs on his Shires Trombone. His degrees
are from University of Michigan (B.M.), University of Northern Colorado
(M.M.), and The Catholic University of America (D.M.A.).
Dr. Gibson was
the Coordinator of the Brass Department at Georgia State University
School of Music in Atlanta from 2000 through 2007. He resigned to
pursue a variety of musical adventures. One such adventure is a series
of Video "Podcasts" begun in January 2007. To date, the videos have
received widespread acclaim and nearly 75,000 downloads.
Cobb County Schools, together with the Cobb Symphony
Orchestra, have named Dr. Gibson an "Artist in Residence" for the 2007
academic year. He regularly visits young people in grades 1-5 to talk
about music and the trombone. This is work he very much enjoys!
Dr. Gibson is
very proud of the accomplishments of his students. Many of his former
students have gone on to earn acceptance at some of the world’s
finest conservatories (including Juilliard, Cleveland Institute of
Music, Eastman School, Indiana University, University of Michigan,
Northwestern, University of Maryland, University of Miami, and others).
Quite a few have won prestigious playing and teaching positions.
Prior to moving
to Atlanta in 2000, Tom was a member of the U.S. Navy Band in
Washington, DC, for 6 years. As a member of the Navy Band, Dr. Gibson
was twice featured as Band Soloist on National Tours. At the time, he
was the most junior member to ever have received such an honor. While
serving with the U.S. Navy Band, Dr. Gibson traveled the world and gave
frequent performances for Presidents, Senators, Prime Ministers,
Cabinet Secretaries, and other VIP’s at the White House,
Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, The US Capital, The Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts, and other venues of great national
significance.
As a performer, Dr.
Gibson has played with Atlanta, National, Alabama, Columbus, Greeley
Philharmonic, Charlotte, Greenville, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, and
many other Symphony Orchestras. He is the Principal Trombonist of the
Atlanta Pops and lead trombonist for the Neons, one of the premiere Top
40 Bands in Atlanta. He has performed the Broadway tours of Chicago,
Wicked, Hairspray, The Producers, The King and I, West Side Story,
White Christmas, and others. He has performed with such legendary
musicians as Leonard Bernstein, James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Faith Hill,
The Temptations, Dave Brubeck, Peter Erskine, Pete Christlieb, Wayne
Newton, Bill Watrous, David Liebman, John Pattitucci, Olivia
Newton-John, Denise Graves, Clark Terry, and others.
Dr. Gibson is a
charter member of the Atlanta Jazz Orchestra, The Atlanta Trombone
Quartet, and The Atlanta Tuba Patrol. His group, The Piedmont Trombone
Society, released their first CD in 2003. Entitled “Let’s
Get Lost”, it was selected by the International Trombone
Association as the Best Jazz Album of the Year. This outstanding
ensemble from Atlanta has performed at the International Trombone
Conference, Tanglewood Institute, and the Great American Brass Band
Festival.
Dr. Gibson’s
performing career has taken him around the world, including
performances in Stockholm, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, The
Hague, Montreux, Toronto, and Neuchatel, . He has performed in almost
every major venue in America, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center,
Hollywood Bowl, Kennedy Center, and Wolf Trap. He is active in the
recording studio, too, having performed on more than 30 commercially
available CD’s and numerous television shows and commercials. His
studio credits include a great deal of work for Turner Studios and
Cartoon Network.
Dr. Gibson maintains
one of the Web’s most popular trombone-related websites,
trombonelessons.com. This website enjoys more than 1 million visits per
year and has won awards and accolades as a model of pedagogical
excellence on the Internet.
Through his performing, conducting, and teaching,
Dr. Gibson is committed to helping other musicians realize their dreams
and enhance their lives through a passionate pursuit of excellence. In
this regard, he credits his major influences as Edwin
“Buddy” Baker, John “Doc” Marcellus, Robert
Hamrick, H. Dennis Smith, and Milt Stevens.
Tom presently resides in
Powder Springs, GA, with his beautiful wife Katlyn, their highly
energized son, Bryce, and their lovely little girl Ella.
