

Dr. Gibson was the Coordinator of the Brass Department at Georgia State
University School of Music in Atlanta from 2000 through 2007. Under his
leadership, the department experienced a 3-fold increase in enrollment
and a doubling of brass faculty.He resigned to
pursue a variety of musical adventures. One such adventure is a series
of Video
"Podcasts" begun in January 2007. To date, the videos have received
widespread acclaim and nearly 150,000 downloads. Because of their
popularity,
Dr. Gibson has been invited to perform and teach around the world.
Cobb
County Schools, together with the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, named Dr. Gibson an
"Artist in Residence" for the 2007 academic year. He regularly
visited young people in grades 1-5 to talk about music and the trombone.
He
also worked with many talented young musicians in his capacity as the Musical
Director of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) Brass Band.
Dr.
Gibson is very proud of the accomplishments of his students. Many of his former
students have gone on to earn acceptance at some of the world's finest
conservatories, including Juilliard, Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman
School, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Northwestern, University of
Maryland, University of Miami, and others. Quite a few have won prestigious
playing and teaching positions.
Prior to moving to Atlanta in 2000, Tom was a member of the U.S. Navy Band in
Washington, DC, for 6 years. As a member of the Navy Band, Dr. Gibson was twice
featured as Band Soloist on National Tours. At the time, he was the most junior
member to ever have received such an honor. While serving with the U.S. Navy
Band, Dr. Gibson traveled the world and gave frequent performances for
Presidents, Senators, Prime Ministers, Cabinet Secretaries, and other VIP's at
the White House, Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, The US Capital, The
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and other venues of great national
significance.
Dr.
Gibson has played with Atlanta, National, Alabama, Columbus, Greeley
Philharmonic, Charlotte, Greenville, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, and many
other Symphony Orchestras. He is the Principal Trombonist of the Atlanta Pops
and lead trombonist for the Neons, one of the premiere Top 40 Bands in Atlanta.
He is also a member of "The Posse" at Bishop Eddie Long's New Birth church in
Lithoinia, GA.
He has
performed the Broadway tours of Chicago, Wicked, Hairspray, Annie, Chorus Line,
The Producers, The King and I, Candide, West Side Story, White Christmas, and
others. He has performed with such legendary musicians as Leonard Bernstein,
James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Faith Hill, The Temptations, Dave Brubeck, Peter
Erskine, Pete Christlieb, Wayne Newton, Bill Watrous, David Liebman, John
Pattitucci, Olivia Newton-John, Denise Graves, Earl Klugh, Johnny Mathis, Clark
Terry, Barry Manilow, Gladys Knight, and others.
Dr. Gibson is a charter member of the Atlanta Jazz Orchestra, The Atlanta
Trombone Quartet, and The Atlanta Tuba Patrol. His group, The Piedmont Trombone
Society, released their first CD in 2003. Entitled "LetÕs Get Lost", it was
selected by the International Trombone Association as the Best Jazz Album of
the Year. This outstanding ensemble from Atlanta has performed at the
International Trombone Conference, Tanglewood Institute, and the Great American
Brass Band Festival.
Dr. Gibson's performing career has taken him around the world, including
performances in Stockholm, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, The Hague,
Montreux, Toronto, and Neuchatel. He has performed in almost every major venue
in America, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Hollywood Bowl, Kennedy
Center, and Wolf Trap. He is active in the recording studio, too, having
performed on more than 30 commercially available CD's and numerous television
shows and commercials. His studio credits include a great deal of work for
Turner Studios, Tyler Perry studios, and Cartoon Network.
Dr. Gibson maintains one of the Web's most popular trombone-related websites,
trombonelessons.com. This website enjoys more than 1 million visits per year
and has won awards and accolades as a model of pedagogical excellence on the
Internet.
Through his performing, conducting, and teaching, Dr. Gibson is committed to
helping other musicians realize their dreams and enhance their lives through a
passionate pursuit of excellence. In this regard, he credits his major
influences as Edwin "Buddy" Baker, John "Doc" Marcellus, Robert Hamrick, H.
Dennis Smith, and Milt Stevens.
Tom presently resides in Powder Springs, GA, with his beautiful wife Katlyn,
their highly energized son, Bryce, and their lovely little girl Ella.
